Password Security Best Practices: How to Generate Strong Passwords

What makes a password strong? Learn the science behind password entropy and how to generate secure, memorable passwords for every account.

Password Security Best Practices: How to Generate Strong Passwords

What Makes a Password Strong?

Password strength is measured by 'entropy' — the number of possible combinations an attacker would need to try to guess it. The two main factors are length and character set size. A password using only lowercase letters (26 options per character) is far weaker than one using uppercase + lowercase + numbers + symbols (94 options per character).

For example, an 8-character lowercase password has 26^8 ≈ 208 billion combinations. An 8-character mixed password has 94^8 ≈ 6 quadrillion combinations — 30,000x harder to brute-force.

Common Password Mistakes to Avoid

Using dictionary words (even with substitutions like 'p@ssw0rd') — modern crackers use dictionary attacks that know common substitutions. Reusing passwords across sites — a breach at one site exposes all your accounts. Using personal information (birthdays, names) — easy to guess or look up. Short passwords under 12 characters — even complex short passwords are vulnerable to modern GPU-based cracking.

The most secure approach is to use a different randomly-generated password for every account, stored in a password manager. You only need to remember one strong master password.

Generate Secure Passwords Instantly

Our free Password Generator creates cryptographically secure random passwords using your choice of length (8-64 characters) and character sets. The tool runs entirely in your browser — no passwords are ever sent to our servers.

For maximum security, we recommend passwords of at least 16 characters with all character types enabled. If you need to remember a password, consider a passphrase of 4-5 random words (e.g., 'correct horse battery staple') which is both memorable and highly secure.
